Much-Parodied Design

In 2008, Barack Obama ran an extremely effective marketing campaign that eventually won him both Advertiser of the Year and the U.S. Presidency.  One aspect of this campaign was the Shepard Fairey “HOPE” poster featuring Obama’s face in a distinctive blue and red style.  These Barack posters were so eye-catching that they were almost instantly parodied by people of all political persuasions on the Internet. Literally hundreds of satirical posters were created.  Some of the memorable ones created by Democrats include a Sarah Palin poster proclaiming “nope” and a John McCain poster stating “hopeless”.  Not to be outdone, the Republicans struck back in style.  One satirical poster has a marijuana joint stuck in Barack Obama’s mouth and the caption reading “dope?”, in a clever reference to his admission of high school drug use in his memoir “Dreams From My Father”.  Another poster striking back at an earlier generation of Democrat has Bill Clinton smiling smugly over the word “grope”, alluding to his infamous affair and impeachment over sexual relations with a White House intern. Some of the best posters, though, are non-political. Benedict XVI is on a poster declaring “pope”, and Bob Hope is on a poster declaring – of course – “hope”.
